I, too, had a negative initial perception of mom blogs until I thought about writing this piece and attended the BlogHer conference last summer. It’s kind of a sad fact of life that one of the strongest entries women have made into the social media world has been marginalized and denigrated when, in fact, mom bloggers are as diverse a group as any other population in the digital ‘verse.

After researching the topic, reading lots of mom blogs, and talking in-depth with these women, I’m a fan! Go, moms and go, mom bloggers!

I read this post with great interest. The reason? Well, several years ago before I started my own blog I noticed an article in The Salt Lake Tribune about “mommy bloggers”. (I think I may have mentioned this to you before.) I read one of the sample posts and the entire thing was about “which one of my kids left the cap off the toothpaste?” Honestly, I didn’t see the appeal… and I never read another mom blog!

But, with your thoughtful and extensive interviews of Ana, Robin and Elisa I can now see the appeal, and the “community-building” these blogs foster. I imagine that as a new mother it would be very comforting to visit the supportive environment of these blogs. I think Robin said it best when she said her blog should be “relatable”.

As you note, this is more typically the type of thing that large companies or brands do when they have too many social media accounts to manage by themselves.

Just wait till you publish your book of photographs or a travel book – then you may want to hire someone to manage your publicity accounts!

At this point, I’m not engaged enough with my own social media sites to consider hiring an account manager. And this is the first I’ve heard of this practice (shows how out of touch I am!).
But… this is a helpful post because if I ever get to the point of actively managing several social media sites I would definitely consider “handing over the keys” to an account manager. And now I’ve got your handy tips to guide me!

Thanks for sharing your adventures with the second graders. I’m not surprised they loved your photographs – they’re spectacular! And they’re so well chosen to illustrate the stories you tell of your travels and discoveries on and off the beaten path.

I admit that “Galaxy Quest” post is a favorite of mine, too. Guess that makes me as smart as a second grader!

The second-graders I shared my blog with today seemed to really enjoy it!
Sure, they didn’t mind listening to me read a bit of travel narrative but what they really loved were the pictures. (I suspect that’s the case with most of the people reading my blog!)
The kids especially seemed to like the wildlife and Giant Sequoia photos, and the pictures from Goblin Valley State Park. One little boy was an expert on the movie “Galaxy Quest”. How about that?
After showing them about 10 posts I asked them if they wanted to see more. “Yeah”, said one of the boys, “Keep going until I’m old!”
So I guess the day was a hit. Hmmm… maybe I should market my blog to second-graders everywhere!

I’ve only read mentions of the fact that this is being rebooted as an A&E series, which starts tonight. No reviews yet. Perhaps they don’t want to spoil it.

It looks a bit like “Twin Peaks,” and they’ve managed to secure some heavy-hitter actors, like Vera Farmiga and Freddie Highmore, who plays the young Norman.
