It’s Library Card Sign-up Month!

Yes, it’s that time of year again, when the American Library Association sponsors Library Card Sign-up Month to remind kids and parents alike that the best resources for homework and life can be found at your local public library.

But you can do so much more than borrow books or look up online references with your library card. In fact, the ALA has this nifty slide show with 60 Ways to Use Your Library Card. Check ‘em out!

  1. Thanks for the reminder about Library Card Sign-up month, Vickie.

I’m sitting in the library in Lake City, Colorado, using the internet. I’m not usually online when on vacation but it’s raining today. When I finish with my computer I’ll be renewing my library card here in our “second home” town!

    • Hi Rita,

That’s so sweet of you to check in during your vacation! Sorry to hear it’s raining, but glad you had an excuse to visit the local library.

Enjoy your time in Lake City!

    • Hi Ginger,

Thanks so much for your comment! I totally agree – that’s one addiction it’s good to have.

Looks like you’re just starting a blog. Congratulations! I’ll be sure to follow.

  2. I just love my local library…always have, no matter where I am living. It’s great to be able to borrow books, of course, but I also like to borrow music and movies. The addition of various electronic resources, not to mention public access computers, has only made my library card that much more valuable. My favorite feature? Being able to request a book that’s somewhere in the system but not on the shelf and have it delivered when it becomes available. Libraries have not forgotten how to offer great customer service!
If you don’t have one – go get a library card! You have everything to gain and nothing to lose.

    • Thanks for sharing your love of libraries, Eric!

That is a great feature. It enables folks living in small towns to have the resources of the world – and their entire state library system – at their fingertips!

I found it interesting that the slide show notes that your library card can mean discounts on things like museum and cultural event entry fees. Here in LA, you also get a discount at public swimming pools – and with temperatures hovering around 100 degrees, that’s a necessary resource!
